Genre Research: Honey: Rise up and dance

Hey ya'll so these next few blogs are gonna be about films that I'm watching related to my genres. The first one I watched was Honey: Rise up and dance. So I'm going to kind of tell you about the types of things that I saw while watching this film. So first I saw many CAMS. When it first starts it you get a pan establishing shot, showing the city then you get an establishing sot that shows you Skyler's(the main character) home. As Skyler is dancing her mom comes into her room and we get multiple POV and over the shoulder shots. As they move through the house we also get close ups and two person shots. When Skyler goes to Pulsar, a crew her sister dances will you see high angles, there is diegetic dialogue as Skyler and her sister as well as their  friends all interact together, you also get a three person shot. Once Skyler leaves, Pulsar begins to rehearse and you get non- diegetic sound due to the music playing. In the studio there is natural lighting coming through the windows. When we cut to Skyler's place of work at the roller rink, there is a lot of colorful and artificial lighting, it is the same when the crew go to the club together and when Skyler and Tyrell (the male lead) go to an underground dance club together. Through out the film there is a lot of casual wear, Skyler wears a uniform at work, a lot of athletic wear and a lot of tight clothing and sweat pants and jackets/ hoodies. Throughout the film there is always a considerable amount of skin showing but not so much that it's inappropriate. During rehearsals dancers will often wear kneepads. A lot of the scenes are at the studio, Skyler's home, or Tyrell's dance studio. Men often wore tank tops and sweatpants. The make up was fairly natural aside from some dark shaded lip stick. In Tyrell's studio there are fairy lights covering the dance floor, along with graffiti all along the walls and some benches in the studio. A lot fo what I liked in this film was how it was constantly changing in setting, they never stayed in one place for too long but it didn't seem crazy like jumping from one place to the next. There was also a good amount of drama throughout the film. Especially between Skyler's boyfriend Luke and Tyrell. What I disliked is we never really saw too much dancing but we saw enough to understand that they were preparing to compete and were pushing to win.
That's all for this blog, see you soon

Genre Research: Choosing the genre

Hey guys!
So I've decided to put two genres in one! I've decided to combine Drama and Hip hop. I've come to this conclusion after researching both types of genres. Hip hop is the basis of my film, however this film cannot survive solely on just hip hop. Another genre needs to be paired with hip hop, luckily with drama films anything can be the basis and drama can be roped in. I feel that these two dramas will make this film strong and keep it interesting while still focusing on the fact the whole film is based on dance. I feel in any case with films there will have to be two genres. It just happened to work out that both of these genres can tie in together without creating too many problems.

Genre Research: different genres

Hey ya'll,
So today I'll be telling you about two different genres and in my next blog I will tell you which genre I will I will be using to film. So the two the two genres I will be explaining are hip hop and drama. I will be explaining the CAMS, CLAMPS, the common editing, common sound, elements of the genre, types of films in the genre, and the elements that I like and dislike. All my film examples will be within the last 7 years.
We're going to start off with the hip hop. We're gonna start with the CAMS, the common types of shots used are:
1. Long shots
2. Wide/Establishing shots
3. Mid shots
4. Medium close up
5. Close up
6. Extreme close up
7. Over the shoulder
8. Cut in
The common CLAMPS are:
For costumes it's very simple common wear that you'd wear everyday or athletic wear such as leggings and a flannel. Lighting is usually either natural or artificial lighting if in a studio. Make up if any is very natural and minimal. Props are simply water bottles, a speaker and a phone. Setting is a studio or any open space.
Common Editing is:
1. Jump cuts
2. Cross cutting
3. Stylizing
The common sound is:
1. Diegetic
2. Non- Diegetic

The types of elements in this genre are:
1. Rapping
2. DJing
3. Graffiti on the walls
4. Freestyle dancing
5. Choreographed dancing

1. Step Sisters (2018)
2. Honey: Rise up and Dance (2018)
3. Battle of the year (2013)
Elements that I like:
I like the passion that is shown for dance and how many people in the films strive and push themselves sometimes to prove a point other times to prove to themselves that they can do it. I also enjoy the music and the types of lighting used in more extravent films such as Honey: Rise up and dance.
Elements I dislike:
With this genre there's not much I really dislike as someone who is passionate about dance.
Our next Genre is Drama!
Common CAMS:
Shots:
1. Close up
2. Shot reverse shot
3. Pov
3. Establishing shot
4. Over the shoulder
Movement:
1. Tracking
2. Handheld movements
3. Eye line match
Angles:
1. High angle
2. Eye- line
Common CLAMPS:
Costumes:
Highly reflect the characters personality (troubled characters typically wear black).
Lighting:
1. Neutral Tones
2. Low key lighting
Actors/Characters:
1. Develop throughout the film
2. Main character facing some type of struggle
3. Relatable
Make up:
Natural
Props:
Reflective of Characters
Setting:
Often reflects the mood of the scene or type of scene.
Common Editing:
1. Face paced editing
2. Jump cuts
3. Inserts
Common Sound:
1. Non- Diegetic (emotional or suspenseful music)
2. Diegetic Dialouge
3. Non- Diegetic (voice overs)

3. Forms a realization at some point
Films in the genre:
1. The lost city (2016)

3. Spiderman: Homecoming (2017)
Elements I like:
I like how relatable everything is and how you feel like you yourself are in the film feeling the emotions.
Elements I dislike:
I dislike how in some films there are stereotypes.

Genre Research: Power Point

So in this power point converted to a JPEG. This project was to help us understand how to research a genre and how to understand a genre. What we had to do was make a slide for different segments our teacher assigned us. We researched the common CAMS (camera angles, movements and shots) and we had to explain them in slight detail and provide pictures. We also researched common CLAMPS (costumes, lighting, mis-en-scene, props, and setting) we as well explained that in detail and provided pictures. We also did common sounds, editing, elements and the elements we liked and disliked. We used pictures for them all and explained why or why not we liked or disliked somethings or we explained the common things. We provided examples of films in the genre and sounds in the genre.

Choosing the pitch

Hey y’all,
I’m back again, and in this blog I’ll be choosing the pitch I will be using. Sorry it’s a little late. So the two pitches I narrowed it down to are a high school love story and the dance troop pitch. So I’m gonna explain how each of the pitch ideas are good and bad to do for the final task, then I’ll reveal which pitch I’ve chosen.
So for a high school love story, it’s a good pitch because it’s relatable and easy to do. The whole reason doing this would prove difficult is the setting. It would also be difficult because there’s many movies out there with a plot like this. Finding a place to end it but show that there’s more coming is quite easy, especially with this type of plot. There are many cliff hangers and many types of ways to end a scene. However, at the same time filming how the movie will start proves difficult.
For the dance troop movie, this movie would be easy to do because I can use my sister as an actor as well as some friends who love to dance as well. I could also ask some kids in my dance class if they’d like to be in it and I could ask my dance teacher if we could use the room since it is a dance studio. Finding places to film wouldn’t be hard because I could use my house, such as the backyard and until February 4th, I can use some open spaces at my moms school. There’s not many down sides to this film because it’s easy to start and easy to end.
So now that you know the break down of everything, I can now reveal the pitch I’ve chosen. I’ve chosen to do the Dance trope film because dance is something that I love and I can do it with the people I love.

Start of the final task

Hey ya'll!
So I know it's been a while so let me introduce myself again. My name's is Taylor and I've decided to work alone for this project. I'm a student at FLHS. I enjoy things such as theatre and dance. I'm also playing softball for the school as well, so the season has now started. I'm a very quiet but nice person, and I'm outgoing around people I'm comfortable with. I have a big family and we all get along well for the most part, we all enjoy different things and support each other. My birthday is coming up and finally I'm turning 16. I do a lot of things school and home wise, I mostly take care of my little brother. My favorite type of music is mainly country music. For the most part my style is comfortable but I'll dress up every now and then. Okay that's enough about me, lol.
So in the previous semester we learned about the fundamentals so to say about filming and film making. We've learned the types of angles we need to use to get the best quality of footage. We also learned this different types of movements needed for certain parts of the film. My favorite thing we learned how to do is editing. I enjoy editing a lot because you get to see piece by piece how everything comes together. Editing is really fun but it can be very frustrating sometimes. Honestly the one skill I'm excited to use for the final task is editing. Yes, it can be the most frustrating and time consuming thing in the world, but all of it is worth it. Editing to me is like making choreography. Frustrating but the end result is the best part of it.
Now to the good stuff, so before I get into this whole thing to you let me quickly define what a pitch is. A pitch is used to describe an idea in 25 words or less and leaves enough time for questions to be asked. So my top three pitches are: The first one is about a group of friends running away to escape reality. They'd be gone just for the weekend because they just want a quick get away from reality, they would meet in a place only they know of. My second pitch is and two sisters who love to dance, it's their favorite thing to do. One day they were dancing in the park and they caught the eye of a dance troope near by and they challenged the sisters to a dance battle. My last pitch is about a high school love story of unrequited  love.

Filming Blog #2

Hey ya'll!
I'm back with another blog. This time I actually have a fun filming story for you. So on Wednesday last week Sage, Jeffery and I went to film and a few friends came along too. We all met up at the pier at Laduerdale- by- the- sea. Once everyone was there we walked over to the bathrooms and used that as our "house" that we walked out of. We had to improvise a bit because we realized that the volleyball courts were at Fort Lauderdale beach not Lauderdale- by- the- sea. So instead of playing volleyball we all ran down the beach into the water, pushing each other in and splashing around. We did change a few things up because well we're teenagers. I enjoyed it none the less, It didn't even feel like we were filming at times, it felt like we were just simply spending time together and having fun. Pushing Jeffery and Jahni into the water and splashing around was probably the most entertaining part while we were at the beach. After all the filming at the beach was done was everyone's favorite part. ICE CREAM, we went to Slone's Ice Cream and each got ice cream. We were all laughing at how they made the bathroom and asked why they would do that. My mom treated us all to yummy ice cream and we were all just enjoying ourselves. After the ice cream was done we all went to go see puppies! They were all so cute they were jumping around, laying down and just enjoying the attention they were getting. Once all the filming was done Jeffery and Jahni went home, and Sage, my sisters and mom, Eric, Logan, and I  all turned the rest of the time into a beach day. We played football, ran around and just enjoyed hanging out with each other. Of course my mom took millions of pictures and we all enjoyed it. Once it was time to go we all bid our goodbyes and went our separate ways. My family and I went to get food and enjoyed the rest of our "girls day". All in all it really was a great way to start our break, even if it was for school.  There's no specific thing that stood out. Every minute of it was enjoyable for me, shooting this music video was really just pure fun for me. I really wouldn't have changed anything we did for anything. Yes, the project was for school but it was fun, we got to really be teenagers. Okay my loves, this is all I have for you today!
I'll see you again soon!
love, Tay
